What is MESA?

MESA logoMathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) is a nationally recognized academic development program that supports industry leaders in their efforts to find great new talent and provides industry sponsors with the highest return on their investment in MESA. Historically, MESA has demonstrated that student success in these areas is the direct result of a strong community of support; provided by participation in all aspects of the MESA program. The MESA pathway includes academic support, personal and professional development in a K-20 pathway model.

Community colleges have sought to discover methods to increase the accountability of higher education without negatively impacting the quality of their educational programs.  This search for greater efficacy has resulted in new and innovative approaches to student learning, as exemplified by the MESA Community College Program (MCCP), now active in nine MESA states.

MCCP provides mathematics, engineering and science academic development to educationally disadvantaged community college students so they excel academically, and transfer to four-year institutions as science, engineering and math majors. MCCP has strong support from industry, where students can learn firsthand about career options, special scholarships and internships.

MESA administrative team supports industry to identify and connect new talent with research opportunities and internship openings in their organization.

Who is MESA?

MESA is students!

Any first–generation, low–income, and historically underrepresented student (African American, Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, female) pursuing a math–based STEM degree is eligible to join the MESA program. 44 percent of students at Wenatchee Valley College in STEM degrees are from historically underrepresented groups. 35 percent are female identified.

MESA is administration!

The MESA administrative team consists of the Program Director, Retention Coordinator and two Faculty Sponsors. Please let us know how we can support you!

MESA is you!

MESA is not a stand-alone program. Instead, it is designed to provide targeted support for industry to find the best fit for research and internship openings, organize site visits to your company, and develop new and exciting initiatives in the Valley. Washington state is a national leader in STEM: we rank second in the concentration of STEM jobs, first in the concentration of software publishing companies, and fourth in the "New Economy" index for innovation and entrepreneurship. If the United States is to maintain its leadership in STEM, we must produce approximately one million more STEM professionals over the next decade than is currently projected.

How can you get involved?

Spread the word!

Students can only access MESA resources if they are officially enrolled in the program. Printed materials for your organization are available from the MESA team.

Industry and community partners can support the WVC MESA program in different ways. For more information, contact the MESA Team!
