Alumni Spotlight: Cathy Rixey '88
When Cathy Rixey walked across the stage to receive her associate degree from Wenatchee Valley College, it wasn’t just a diploma she was collecting. It was proof of a dream fulfilled.
At the time, Cathy was balancing life as a college student with being a mom to two young children, ages three and four. Juggling coursework, family life, and future plans wasn't easy, but Cathy was determined to keep moving forward. She remembers her WVC graduation ceremony vividly: outdoors, full of pride, and marking her first big milestone toward a bigger dream—a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Central Washington University.
“The WVC campus was convenient, welcoming, and exactly what I needed to complete my AAS degree,” Cathy shares. “It gave me the foundation I needed to build my future.”
Today, Cathy is a leader in the banking and mortgage lending industry, with a career that has included roles like Senior Vice President at Pacific Northwest Bank. She is quick to credit her education with opening doors that would have otherwise remained closed. “Having a degree helped set me apart. It got me in the room, gave me opportunities, and shaped the way I approach challenges.”
Outside of her career, Cathy remains deeply involved in the Wenatchee community. She has served on numerous professional and housing boards, led the National Association of Professional Mortgage Women for three years as president, and has been a proud member of the Women’s Service League since 2014. She also serves on the WVC Foundation Board, giving back to the college that helped her build her future.
WVC, Cathy says, prepared her for more than just a career. “It taught me time management, resilience, creativity, and adaptability—skills that have been crucial throughout my personal and professional life. College isn’t just about academics. It’s about shaping you into the kind of person who’s ready for anything.”
Her advice for current students? Listen, learn, and grow. Be engaged both inside and outside of the classroom. College is a full experience, and it’s yours to make the most of.
