Alumni Spotlight: Blake Murray '75

Blake Murray

Blake Murray first enrolled in WVC’s refrigeration program in 1969, but a sudden wave of patriotism led him to leave after one year to join the Army. After serving for three years, he returned to WVC, this time pursuing forestry, a decision that fed his love of the outdoors.

"Being in the woods was where I felt at home," Blake shared. While his days in the forestry program left a lasting impression, Blake's favorite WVC memory came years later. After starting a new chapter as a WVC employee in 1997, he met his wife on campus — making WVC an even more special part of his life story.

Blake eventually retired as a teacher and Program Director for WVC’s Automotive Technology program in 2013. Today, he remains active with Plug-In NCW, advocating for hybrid vehicles, and stays involved in his local church.

When asked how WVC prepared him for life, Blake credits his math classes for teaching him a logical approach to problem-solving, something that served him well during two decades in the service department at a local dealership. "I made a living solving problems," he said.

His advice for current students? "Take advantage of the small class sizes. Talk to your instructors. They are here because they care and will help you. And if you are thinking about a four-year degree, double check which classes transfer and take as many as you can. WVC even offers four-year degrees now, so be sure to look into it."
