Alumni Spotlight: Maria Navarrete '11
For Maria Navarrete, Wenatchee Valley College was more than just a place to start her higher education journey. It was a place that felt like home. As a first-generation student, the idea of starting at a large university felt overwhelming. WVC offered something different: a welcoming environment, flexible class schedules that fit around her work life, smaller classes with personalized support, and an affordable path to her future.
While at WVC, Maria found more than just textbooks and assignments - she found community. Long hours studying in the library turned into friendships that lasted beyond graduation. Encouragement from professors helped build her confidence, and one memorable sociology class sparked a passion for social work that would shape her career.
Today, Maria is the Migrant Out-of-School Youth and Health Coordinator at the North Central Educational Service District. In her role, she helps connect migratory students and their families with the educational and health resources they need to thrive. It's work that feels full-circle for Maria, who once sat in the same position of dreaming about a better future.
WVC continues to hold a special place in her heart. The foundation she built here didn’t just prepare her for success in earning a master’s degree in social work, it helped her family as well. In fact, five of her siblings also attended WVC, making it a true family tradition.
Maria’s advice for today’s students is clear: "Take full advantage of everything WVC has to offer. Get involved in programs like CAMP, TRIO, MESA, Student Senate, and clubs. Build relationships with your professors and don’t be afraid to ask for support. There’s so much here to help you succeed — you just have to reach for it."
She leaves students with one last reminder: "In five or ten years, you won’t regret the things you did — only the chances you didn’t take. Querer es poder. If you have the will, you have the power."
